What Is ORP?
ORP or oxidation reduction potential is a measure of the strength of the oxidising or reducing power of a liquid or solution. Oxidation means the loss of electrons and reduction the gain – in other words, ORP describes the exchange of electrons.
If a solution has a negative ORP, it has an excess of electrons and is looking to donate these electrons somewhere. The reverse is of course true – if a solution is positive, it is looking to pull electrons from somewhere else.
This may seem a complicated idea but there are instances of oxidation and reduction in our daily lives that we observe all the time.
For example, rusting is an example of oxidation – the iron nail ends up stripped of its electrons as moisture and air gradually take them up as oxidising agents. The same occurs in an apple that is sliced and exposed to air.
From there, it is easy to imagine oxidation within the body – the same browning that occurs to the apple happens within your body. This happens to your delicate cells, blood vessels, organs and DNA. The consequences of this damage are very real.
However, not all oxidation is harmful
Oxidation & The Immune System
Your immune system uses the same chemical process of oxidation to kill harmful bacteria and inactivate their toxins. It uses this to halt the progress of infection inside the body. The reverse is also true – reduction is used by the body to prevent damage from oxidants. Antioxidants are reducing agents that donate electrons to minimise damage. If this process is hampered in any way due to a lack of vitamins or minerals, oxidation continues and the damage continues.
The destruction of healthy tissue by this process is known as free radical damage.
The essential function of all antioxidants is to supply electrons to radicals that are missing that one electron. If they succeed in doing this, the free radicals are neutralised and no longer damage your body. The most bioavailable electrons are the most useful ones and have the greatest capacity for healing. In fact, there is a whole theory of ageing that enters around free radicals – it’s called the Free Radical Theory of Ageing and it postulates that all ageing is due to the cumulative damage of free radicals.
Now, alkaline ionised water has a very low ORP and therefore possesses antioxidant potential. Kangen Water Dubai offers the best of the best when it comes to these healing properties. To find out more about how to access these properties, contact one of our consultants and stay tuned!
